Born Clara Maria Leigh ( c. 1767 in London ), to amateur artist Jared Leigh, she worked initially for many years as an artist’s model, as early as her family first showing up in George Romney’s 1768 painting ‘The Leigh Family.’ ( Now housed in the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne, Australia. )In 1786 she married artist Francis Wheatley, and together the two of them had four children, one of which would only survive a month. Clara began painting miniatures, and at the time of her husband’s death in 1801, she was already showing at the Royal Academy. She began struggling to support her family, though luckily already a prolific botanical artist at that time, she quickly found herself in the line of sights of botanist and publisher Samuel Curtis. Together the two of them would go on to do many works together, Clara would publish full sized pieces for the publication, Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, as well as two botanical books: Monogram on the Genus Camellia, and The Beauties of Flora. After becoming the third wife of actor Alexander Pope in 1807, she began to teach painting to the women of the British crown, one of her more notable pupils being Princess Sophia of Gloucester. Clara Maria Pope passed away in London on December 24th, 1838 at the age of 71.
