Original Hand Colored 1825 Engraving Map of The Kingdom of Babylon and Assyria
Original Map by Jehoshaphat Aspin
Engraved ( Sculpt ) by A. Keith
Published by Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon in Liverpool, England
The page is approx. 10” x 7 ½”, and features a middle left simple, yet elegant cartouche and hand colored borders and water. This map is not “new” or in “new” condition. It was printed in 1825 and is in fair condition considering its antique age. This map sports age spots and foxing, but is in otherwise untouched condition. Edges are mostly intact, save for the very corner missing on the upper right, and the bottom left corner folded.
The map pictured is the one that you will receive.
Active as a humorist author, illustrator, and geographer in the early 19th century, Aspin is mostly a mystery to today, as the name was believed to be an alias for a woman who worked during this time. Most well known for the celestial book with illustrations, A Familiar Treatise on Astronomy, Explaining the General Phenomena of the Celestial Bodies; with Numerous Graphical Illustrations, written to accompany the 1824-1825 book Urania’s Mirror, or, A View of the Heavens. Aspin would also publish several children’s books, such as geographical guessing games.
All items listed are from V&J Duncan in Savannah, GA. The shop began in 1983 with one tabletop of antique maps and has grown into a vast collection of old engravings, mezzotints, lithographs, photographs, old books, and antique prints.
