This print is in great condition, the entire page measuring at 22”L x 30”W. The print is completely unmarked, save for the indentation of the printing plate that can be seen in the margins. The edges of the page are worn, but it does not at all disturb the condition of the image. Being reprinted, the bottom text is somewhat faded but the image is still in good quality.

Notable as one of the most famous artists and researchers in Ornithology, John Audubon was born in 1785 in Saint Domingue ( Known today as Haiti ) to an unknown mother and a Frenchman father. At the early age of five he was taken from his home during the Haitian Revolution to live in France and be raised underneath his father’s wife. It was here that he garnered a fascination for art and nature, as well as music. In order to avoid being drafted into Napoleon’s army, John at the age of 18, made his way to America. John is notable for being the first documented case of bird banding, watching certain species of bird to see if they return to their nest the following year. Though his contributions to art and Ornithology were great, Audubon was notorious in his field for the complex and problematic details involving how his portfolio grew- from the severity of participating in trafficking of enslaved peoples to more minor infractions, such as being accused of academic plagiarism. John Audubon passed away in 1851 after the last publication of his prints in 1843, and is buried off of 155th street and Broadway in New York City, New York.
