Titian Peale was born on November 17th, 1799 into a family of artists and naturalists. His namesake was that of his deceased half brother, an already fairly prolific Ornithologist and Entomologist at eighteen, when he died of yellow fever. His father was an artist and curated a museum, which all of his older brothers helped supply, and he would eventually do as well. At a young age his interests were encouraged, and as early as 1816 some of his entomology prints were published, in Thomas Say’s American Entomology. A year later he would accompany Say and some others on an expedition to Florida and Georgia, the first ever privately sponsored trip for a museum. For the next thirty one years he would travel around the country and gather specimen samples and draw his findings. Peale would even go on to design some of the coins for the United States Mint Office. He worked for the Patent Offices in his later years, and he passed away in Philadelphia on March 13th, 1885.
