A Belgian born French botanist and painter, born the 10th of July 1759, in Saint-Hubert, Belgian Luxembourg. During his career he painted Marie Antoinette and other prevalent members of the French royal court, up through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. He survived this political turmoil due to his intricate botanical paintings. He did not really get an education in his youth, he left school at thirteen to get a job doing interior decoration and as a commission painter. He would leave Luxembourg and travel to Paris to be with his brother in 1782. There he would be ushered into botanical artwork by two botanists, influenced by the rapidly growing nature of this line of work. One of those botanists, Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle, would be the one to introduce him to his future patron, Marie Antoinette. Redoute would pass away on the 19th of June 1840 in Paris, France. A preservationist of the Belgian and Dutch floral painting tradition, he is often the one thought about when in regards to French botanical illustrators today.
