Born at Nantwich in Cheshire, England in the latter part of 1545. Little is known about Gerard’s early life and upbringing, but it is widely speculated from his Coat of Arms that he descended from the landowning Gerard family of the Tudor era. At the age of sixteen he became an apprentice of a barber-surgeon in his younger years, becoming quite successful at the practice and quickly earning the ability to work on his own. He claimed a lot of his plant knowledge came from his travels around the world, though it is unclear how truthful this is, being that he expressed once in a letter having only gone abroad one time. He was regarded as a crook and accused of plagiarism, as a lot of his plates for Herball were another individuals’, Jacobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus, who had allegedly borrowed some of these woodblocks himself. Often some of the information in it was fabricated entirely. Gerard married Agnes ( Or Anne ) and only one of their five children would survive them after their deaths in 1612 and 1620 respectively.
