Born in Nuremberg on February 13th, 1561, Basilius Besler became an Apothecarist at a time when herbal medicine was crucial, and established a botanical garden for which he became very well known. Following the death of Joachim Camerarius the younger, avid botanist and Prince-Bishop of the time, Johann Konrat von Gemmingren took him under his employ, and Besler took over the remaining plants of Camerarius’ and became the curator of the Garden of Eichstätt. During his time there the Prince-Bishop would commission a collection of all of the contents of his garden, a feat that would take Besler sixteen years and many helping hands to complete. Unfortunately Gemmingen would never see the final product of his request, as he passed away a year before its initial publication, in 1612. Besler considered himself neither an artist or scientist, instead relying on the works of others for his knowledge, and enlisting the aid of other artists. He struggled to get financial compensation from his previous employers’ successors, though was finally able to buy a house in Nuremberg for 2500 florins, the cost of four copies of his Florilegium. He married twice, first to Rosine Flock, and then to Susanne Schmidt. With the two women he in total had sixteen children. Basilius Besler died March 13th, 1629, in Nuremberg, Germany.
