WALTER RONALD LOCKE 1940 BLACK AND WHITE ETCHING OF PALMETTOS IN FLORIDA

Original Etching of Palmettos, done in Florida by Walter Ronald Locke
Limited Edition Print through the Associated American Artists- New York, New York.

Titled and signed by the artist in pencil, dated 1940.

This print is not “new” or in “new condition.” This is an older vintage print and the quality of that will be reflected in the work. It was printed in 1940 and is in phenomenal condition considering its age. The full page is approx. 16”L x 12”W and the piece itself is spotless, save for the edges of the printing plate, which show signs of aging and discoloration. The top corners have some discoloration and old fibers from where they at one point had been taped down behind cheap matting.

The print pictured is the one that you will receive.

Born and raised in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1883, Locke studied art under the two illustrators Louis Kronbert and Alfred Hutty. During his lifetime his work was shown at the Library of Congress and the Society of American Etchers. He is best known for the intricacy and detail put into his work, each piece sometimes taking upwards of months to complete in order to get every detail right. Involved with the Associated American Artists group, a community devoted to producing and marketing fine art works nationwide, many of his works around today are of the Florida landscape where he spent the remainder of his life living, but he also has completed works of other places in the country. He died in Pinellas Co., Florida in 1949.

The Associated American Artists had this to say about him:

“W.R. Locke spent twelve years actually living and working in the woods, without ever once coming out to a civilized center, for he loves trees and spends his Summers with them in the hill country and his Winters with them in the South depicting them in copper. His works are often the results of months of study, and of an almost impossible amount of long hard work, so that every least bit of foliage may be accurate and detailed. They have a simplicity which reflects his own meticulous care in their production. Locke received his art training under Louis Kronnberg and Alfred Hutty. He was awarded First Prize in the 1938 Annual Exhibit of the St. Petersburg Art Club, and numerous etchings of his which we have presented have been acquired by Yale University, Wesleyan University, Iowa State College, Berea College, William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, Binghamton Museum of Fine Arts, Cornell University, Skidmore College, Syracuse University, Brooklyn College, and Robert Hull Fleming Museum. The magazine “American Forests” recently devoted a full length article to Locke’s unique series of tree etchings.”
